The Mürzzuschlag station rebuild and refurbishment is a major infrastructure upgrade in Austria that will provide passengers with a more comfortable and efficient travel experience. From 2026 onwards rail passengers will be able to travel from Vienna to Graz in less than two hours, saving up to an hour on journey times.
The new infrastructure consists of new tracks and a new tunnel. The track area will be adapted so that the line of the Semmering Base Tunnel is integrated into the existing Semmering line. To achieve this, the track systems will have to be completely renewed. A total of nine kilometres of track will be laid, 31 points installed and 41,000 tonnes of ballast required.
As well as this, Mürzzuschlag Station will face refurbishment that is in-line with it’s listed building status, with its external appearance reflecting the early 20th century. To make the station more user friendly an additional Park & Ride facility will be created with room for 370-capacity parking.
The main construction work will be carried out by PORR and will take place in several phases as well as during ongoing railway operations.
This complex project involves numerous special tasks and construction phases that need to be carried out simultaneously. This is in addition to the site staying open and operating a service to the public throughout.
During the execution of the 84 construction phases all project participants must be fully coordinated. Even though such construction work is one of PORR’s core competencies; active rail operations on the line and in the station area represent a challenging situation for the team.
PORR are working with a person responsible for quality (a QVP). It is responsible on the part of the employee for the self-monitoring of the execution as well as the bases of the declaration of conformity on the building site. A project of this scale requires stringent organisation and control. To this end, ÖBB, as the client of PORR, prescribes its own monitoring for ongoing quality control.
To optimise self-monitoring, the work processes and structure are digitally mapped and controlled in thinkproject. This automated control method ensures complete documentation and thus enables comprehensive proof for the client ÖBB.
The fast results of the digital self-monitoring accelerate the coordination processes and thus facilitate the construction process. In addition, the data collected in the thinkproject platform is then advantageous for further statistics, reporting, checks and more. As all files such as photos, test certificates and segment plan sections are included in the control process, the obligation to provide evidence for selective documentation is fulfilled immediately and at the touch of a button.

Objection Management System for the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link Tunnel
